What is Photodynamic Therapy

Photodynamic therapy is a type of therapy using a photosensitizer, an organic compound, combined with light to induce cellular death through a process called photothermal energy. PDT has been found to have the potential to kill harmful microbial organisms, including viruses, fungi and bacteria.

Photodynamic Therapy can be administered via exposure to light or as a therapy where the light is delivered through the use of light-sensitive devices. The light emitted from the light source may be either ultraviolet light (UV) or blue light (OL). Depending on the light source, PDT has different light spectrum characteristics.

The photodynamic light therapy has the potential to destroy a wide range of infectious agents, by inducing cellular destruction and death of all microorganisms in the pathogen’s environment. As a result, the PDT treatment is known to kill many types of microbes.

Photodynamic Therapy has been reported to be a safe, effective and cost-effective alternative to traditional medical therapies. The treatment for chronic diarrhoea is based on a theory which holds that photodynamic treatment reduces intestinal inflammation and increases absorption of nutrients from the intestine.

This theory is not supported by scientific data, however, and there is no evidence that photodynamic phototherapy is beneficial in preventing dehydration or promoting healing. Some patients may report increased symptoms or tenderness at the site of photodynamic treatment, which may be due to an allergic reaction to some of the dye used in photodynamic treatments

  • Sarcoma.

While Photodynamic Treatment does not cure cancer, it is an attractive alternative because it does not require surgery or drugs to help patients heal themselves. In addition, it does not cause side effects, and it requires little or no maintenance.
