What is Lithotripsy and What You Need to Know

Lithotripsy is an invasive medical procedure by which the surgical removal of crystallized solid materials like kidney stones, benzodiazepines or gall stones is done. The word “tophi removal” is derived from Greek words meaning “destruction of stones”.

Kidney stones are formed in the kidneys or other urinary system organs due to uric acid accumulation. In order to get rid of these stones permanently, they should be removed surgically. There are different surgical methods for removing these stones from the body.

Kidney removal is mostly done through the use of lithotripsy. Lithotripsy has a great potential to remove the kidney stones without affecting any other organs like the heart, lungs, or other vital body parts. However, this surgical treatment is not very safe if there are no other alternatives to take care of the kidney problems

The surgical technique is called lithotripsy of the oesophagus and involves the surgery of the gallbladder to get rid of the kidney stones. The surgical method of the removal of kidney and gall stones requires the surgical incisions to be made in the stomach and into the gallbladder.

These are not simple cases to remove the kidney and gall stones. In most cases, the surgeon has to insert a laparoscope or an endoscope through which he can easily remove the stones. The first thing that is done after performing the surgery is to remove all the stones. Then, a catheter or a cannula is inserted in order to remove the fluid or the crystals.

After that, the procedure will start with the removal of the calcium stones. Kidney removal is also done through the same procedure. If your kidney stones are too large and if they have formed an abscess, then surgery through the use of lithotripsy becomes necessary.

The only side effect associated with the use of lithotripsy is that some stones may get stuck in the catheter and need to be removed by surgery. But, this is rare and very few cases actually. Even when they do get stuck, they can be removed easily and with no pain.

In order to get rid of the stones, the doctor will usually use different tools and techniques depending upon the type of stone that is present in the kidney. However, it is always advisable to have a complete medical examination to find out the exact reason for the problem so that the correct removal can be given to the patient.

Some people, especially the older people, tend to have stones in the kidney due to the increased levels of oxalate in their body. The stones in this group can be easily removed with a special machine called lithotripsy.

If a patient suffers from a type of kidney problem, which is not caused by stones, then no surgery is required

The general method of removing the stone using this type of machine is a combination of local anesthesia and a cannula. Then, the stone gets removed through the use of a catheter. When the local anesthesia wears off, the doctor injects a dye into the area to see whether or not the stone has come out.

If yes, then the catheter is removed and then the patient can expect that all the blood and other parts of the stone are now outside. But, if no, then the patient will require surgery. Then, if all the blood and other parts of the stone are still inside, then the patient must undergo another surgery session to remove the entire stone from the kidney.
