What is Ewing Sarcoma and How Can it Be Treated?

The term ‘Ewing sarcoma’ simply refers to a rare kind of cancerous bone tumour. Although there are many rare forms of cancerous bone cancer, the most common type of this cancer is bone cancer known as sarcoma. There are a number of different types of Ewing sarcoma and the most common one is the bone sarcoma.

This type of bone cancer is quite difficult to detect because it grows very slowly. It is estimated that bone cancer that has been growing in the body for a year or longer can be diagnosed when it is more than three and a half inches in size.

The other possible, but less common, symptoms may include a high temperature (fever), severe tiredness and weight loss. In some cases of the ailment, there may not be any symptoms at all. Treatment for Ewing sarcoma

  • Radiotherapy

Chemotherapy may be used before surgery to shrink the tumour and make it easier to remove. Ewing sarcoma also responds well to radiotherapy. The patient may have surgery to remove part or all of the bone affected by cancer. This type of surgery is known as resection. Limb-sparing surgery involves removing the area of bone on an arm or leg where the cancer is growing. A piece of metal (prosthesis) or a bone graft will be used to replace the piece of bone that is removed.
