Understanding the Different Types of Heart Muscle Diseases

When heart muscle disorders strike, the heart is immediately subjected to a series of stressful physiological events, including heart attacks, arrhythmias, congestive heart failure and sudden death. This stress can lead to irreversible damage to the heart. The word heart muscle refers to a group of several heart muscle disorders that impair the ability of the heart to pump heart-pumping blood.

Some heart muscle disorders are inherited, which means that they are due to a defect in DNA, which can only be transmitted from parents to children. Others are caused by external forces such as heredity, age, sex, and genetics. Several hearts muscle disorders are usually associated with heart attacks or angina.

These include the following

  • Coronary heart disease (CHD)
  • Myocardial infarction (MI)
  • Cardiac arrhythmias

Some of these conditions occur in the absence of a heart attack or angina. Examples of Coronary heart disease include atherosclerosis and fatty liver disease. Coronary heart disease (CHD) occurs when the walls of the coronary arteries, vessels that supply blood to the heart, become clogged or narrowed.

The narrowing prevents the flow of blood and oxygenated blood to the heart muscles. The most common type of Coronary heart disease is a heart valve disease. Other common forms of CHD include

  • Peripheral arterial disease
  • Valvular heart disease
  • Hypercholesterolemia

It is important to note that there is no single Coronary heart disease; instead, there are several types.

Myocardial infarction, also referred to as a heart attack, occurs when the myocardium, the tissue that produces the heart muscle, suffers an injury, typically due to a blood clot. If left untreated, this injury can damage the heart muscle and result in a heart attack. Some of the conditions that cause myocardial infarction include

  • Myocardial ischemia
  • Coronary artery disease

Congestive heart failure (HF) is the condition where the heart muscle fails to provide sufficient amounts of blood and oxygenated blood to the heart muscles. In this condition, the heart is not able to pump enough blood and oxygenated blood to the muscles.

Because of this lack of blood and oxygen, the heart muscle cannot work properly and can no longer perform at its optimal capacity. The symptoms of congestive heart failure are

  • Chest pain
  • Irregular heartbeat (Arrhythmia)
  • Shortness of breath
  • Dizziness and fatigue
  • A feeling of fullness in the chest

As mentioned above, congestive heart failure is a condition where the heart does not produce enough amount of blood and oxygenated blood to the muscles. This lack of blood leads to a lack of oxygenated blood to the heart muscle, which can cause the muscles of the heart to weaken.

Cardiac arrhythmia is also referred to as the arrhythmia of the heart. This condition occurs when the rhythms of the heartbeat out of sync with the beats of the heart. The heartbeat rhythm is affected when the heart rhythm is not in accordance with the flow of blood and oxygenation in the blood.

Coronary artery disease or CAD or heart attack occurs when the blood clot or atherosclerotic plaque within the arteries of the heart ruptures, which causes blood clots to form and block the arterial blood vessels. This condition can either occur spontaneously or as a result of a heart attack or coronary artery disease.

Hypertension is also known as a type of heart muscle diseases

When you have hypertension, you have high blood pressure. When you have high blood pressure, the blood vessels that bring blood into the heart muscle become weak, which causes your heart muscle to exert too much force on the muscles surrounding it.

Coronary artery disease (CAD) is one of the main causes of cardiac arrhythmias and other heart diseases such as heart attacks and stroke. This condition is the most common cause of coronary artery disease. There are some things that you can do to reduce the risk of these heart muscle diseases. You can start by doing some regular cardiovascular exercise and maintaining a healthy weight.
