When this happens, the symptoms can lead to more painful conditions such as hypoxemia or sepsis. These conditions can be fatal if they are untreated. There are many different types of Thalassemia that are caused by different genetic traits.

A person who is carrying a recessive trait for thalassemia may not be able to produce hemoglobin that transports oxygen to the blood. This person’s symptoms will be similar to those individuals who have normal blood cells, making it difficult to diagnose the condition since the symptoms are so similar.
