Prostate Cancer: The Important Signs and Symptoms

Prostate cancer, also called prostatectomy, is cancer that takes place in the prostate gland. The prostate gland is an organ that is shaped like a walnut-sized gland in men that produces the prostate fluid that transports and nourishes sperm. Prostate cancer accounts for nearly forty percent of all cancers reported in men.

It is the second most common type of cancer in men behind skin cancer. There are several indications of prostate cancer that should not be dismissed. The prostate cancer symptoms that may occur in an afflicted man are similar to those that other men experience.

There are no specific warning signs of prostate cancer. Most prostate cancer symptoms are non-specific and occur as part of the process of normal body functions. Prostate tumors are very small and usually remain undiagnosed until they begin to grow and cause problems.

Although prostate cancer does not typically affect people outside of the working class, some health concerns do exist for some groups of people. The risk factors for this disease may include:

  • Family history of the disease
  • Obesity
  • Old age
  • Being married and having a minority status in a country where it is more prevalent

Black people are significantly more likely than white people to have this disease, and men of the black race are more likely to die from this disease than men of any other race.

These signs and symptoms of prostate cancer can be subtle or they can be more obvious

One of the first signs that a man might have prostate cancer is difficulty starting urination. This difficulty could be caused by pressure on the bladder, which is put on by a tumor. The urine flow becomes less than desired and there may be an increase in frequency.

Other causes for difficulty in starting urination may be enlarged prostates or prostate pockets, caused by the spreading of a tumor onto these structures.

As with other parts of the body, prostate pockets that enlarge and cause increased pressure in the bladder area will cause greater difficulties with urination.

Another symptom of prostate cancer in males is prostate enlargement or pain

Occasionally, enlarged prostate glands can be felt through clothing. In advanced cases, enlarged glands can be detected during a physical examination. If there is a tumor, it will likely be felt as well. If the tissue around the gland is tender, it is also possible that a tumor is present.

Some of the signs and symptoms of prostate gland disease that can be observed during a physical examination are blood in urine, either gross (is visible) or microscopic.

A palpable lump in the groin or at the base of the tailbone is another indication of a growing tumor. Unexplained prostration is also another sign that a tumor could be pressing against the bladder.

These signs and symptoms should prompt a trip to the doctor

Men who have a family history of prostate cancer or a family history of other prostate diseases, such as leukaemia, are at a greater risk than men without a family history.

If one or both of a male’s parents have been diagnosed with prostate cancer, there is a greater chance that he may be diagnosed with this disease as well.

If a male child has had breast cancer, his chances of having prostate cancer are increased as are those of a boy who has had vaginal intercourse. Boys who have an undiagnosed family history of these cancers are at a higher risk than those who do not.

The signs and symptoms of prostate cancer may cause a person to seek medical attention

If these symptoms are present, a doctor should be seen promptly to ensure that there are no complications. There are several different methods that can be used to detect prostate cancer, including: digital rectal exams, abdominal CT scans, and ultrasound prostate exams.

If a patient observes any abnormal signs or symptoms, it is important to see a doctor immediately to ensure that these are not the symptoms of another condition.
