Positron Emission Tomography: (PET Scan) How Can it Be Used?

Positron Emission Tomography, also known as PET Scanning is an imaging technique that uses radioactive molecules to image and monitor metabolic processes in the human body. It is a non-invasive and non-surgical method which has many advantages including easy procedures, faster results, no need for a medical procedure, and the ability to be used to diagnose and treat many different health problems.

A positron emission tomogram is designed to be used by a number of different groups of patients, including children. They can also be used to examine the human brain and other tissues in patients who are in need of a diagnostic test. Because this imaging method uses a small amount of radiation it has been successful in detecting and diagnosing a number of serious illnesses and diseases, such as:

  • Cancer
  • Parkinson’s disease
  • Diabetes, and
  • Alzheimer’s disease.

Positron emissions are produced when the positron is absorbed by a radioactive substance called positronium. The positron is then converted to a photon, which is then transmitted through a fibre optic cable. The result is a short burst of light which produces the image that is then interpreted with a computer.

When there is a tumour, the positron is bound to a protein called a positron-emitting isotope. This binding causes the positron-emitting isotope to emit a positron. In order to determine if a tumour is present, the doctor can use this information to make an accurate diagnosis. This technique can also help to determine if a patient is suffering from another condition.

Positron Emission Tomography Functions

A positron emission tomography can be used to examine healthy patients as well as to find out if a person is suffering from a particular illness. For example, they can be used to check for signs of heart disease, high cholesterol, asthma, and ulcers.

The test can even be used to monitor blood pressure in patients who have had a previous heart attack or stroke. Positron Emission Tomography can also be used to detect

  • Alzheimer’s disease
  • Cerebral palsy, and
  • Parkinson’s disease.

In addition to these diseases it can also help to detect

  • Heart disease
  • Tumours
  • Kidney stones, and
  • many other health conditions.

The tests are used to determine the rate of circulation in patients, so that doctors can use a variety of treatments to combat these conditions. A positive Positron Emission Tomograph test can be used to determine if the patient has a heart attack or a stroke.

PET Scan can also help to monitor the progress of certain illnesses, such as

  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Tuberculosis, and
  • Lung cancer

It is used in conjunction with X-ray machines, CAT scan, and Magnetic Resonance Imaging. A positive test using a Positron Emission Tomograph can indicate whether a person is suffering from cancer and whether they are suffering from lung cancer. A negative test can be used to diagnose bladder or kidney disease.

A positive Positron Emission Tomographer test can help to determine whether a child is suffering from congenital heart disease and whether he or she should be admitted to hospital. This can be used in conjunction with EKG, a CT Scan, or an MRI.

Many different tests can be conducted on a child using a Positron Emission Tomography machine. These tests can include a

  • Blood test
  • Skin test
  • Urine test
  • Blood profile, and
  • Special dye test which can detect blood-borne pathogens.

If a blood test is positive, the doctor can take the blood sample and analyze the P-EI signal by using a Positron Emission Tomograph machine. If the test is positive, the doctor can use a machine to look at the P-EI signal in the living tissue. He or she can then make an accurate diagnosis and determine if there is a cancerous growth in the living tissue.

Another way that a Positron Emission Tomography machine can be used is in conjunction with a CT Scan. The machine will produce a high-resolution image of the tissue sample and allow the doctors to determine if there is an artery blockage or if cancer has spread.
