Nowadays, the phrase “healthy planet” is more important than ever. The idea of leaving a healthy planet for our children and grandchildren is deeply troubling to many people. Our food sources are getting more contaminated with pesticides and other chemicals, our water supplies are being polluted with chemicals, and our air is getting polluted with industrial pollutants.
As a result, many people are starting to become aware of what they’re eating and drinking. But they still don’t see the big picture: eating healthy directly benefits us in many ways.
Eating healthy foods will help us

- Relieve some of our stress and fatigue
- Prevent disease
- Prevent obesity
- Help keep our bodies in good condition so that we can enjoy a long and happy life
However, most people don’t pay much attention to the connection between eating healthy and environmental health. Most of us tend to think of exercise or diet as separate from the prevention of illness.
The reality is that both eating healthy and exercise are vital components of a healthy lifestyle. Just as you need to have good genes to be able to run a successful business or maintain your weight, the environment you live in helps to determine your health.
A healthy planet would be a healthy society, too
If everyone knew the connection between eating healthy and environmental health, maybe people would be less likely to destroy the planet with their unhealthy lifestyles.
But most of us don’t make the correlation between the two seriously. And, as a result, we could be doing our part to ensure that a healthy planet is maintained.
The first step in making a difference is to understand the concepts of healthy habits and fitness
Healthy habits are those that we do on a daily basis without thinking. This includes things like waking up at a reasonable time, taking the stairs instead of the elevator, walking or biking instead of driving, reading instead of watching television and taking public transit instead of driving.
These healthy habits can be as simple as taking the stairs at work instead of the elevator and leaving a chair and a glass of water on your desk. They don’t need to be anything complex. All they need to be is regular and easy.
Fitness is different than healthy habits
Fitness involves the behaviors that we engage in to promote healthy living. For example, instead of driving to the gym for an hour, going for a swim instead of skipping it, and using the stairs instead of the elevator to get to your job, you could walk or bike to the gym instead of commuting by bus or train.
These behaviors would have a measurable impact on the environment. If more people exercised like this, there would be less traffic in the parking lots of businesses. It also wouldn’t cost as much to pollute the air and the ground because people would be walking or riding bikes instead of driving cars.
Creating a healthy planet means creating healthy habits
One way to do this is to start eating healthy and exercising regularly. This will make you feel better and help the planet stay healthy. When you eat healthy foods and exercise regularly, you’re not only helping yourself look and feel good, you’re also helping other people look and feel good too. That’s a big deal!
When you eat healthy and exercise, you start thinking about what you can do to improve your health and the planet. That means that your habits become part of your life and you start thinking about things like
- The way you prepare your food
- Where you go shopping
- What you do when you’re stressed
- How much time you spend watching television
- Whether or not you smoke
Changing a habit can be tough. Changing any habit, let alone changing a healthy habit, can be hard. You might think that there’s no reason for it. After all, you eat healthily so why wouldn’t you be eating healthy? Well, there’s more to this than you may think.
When you start changing habits, you’re creating habits that help create a healthy planet for yourself and future generations. Your habits can lead to a healthy planet. Don’t forget that.
